2008 Workshop Performances to Feature Works by Balanchine and Robbins

The School of American Ballet’s 2008 Workshop Performances at Lincoln Center’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater will feature the Balanchine masterpiece Concerto Barocco and three works by Jerome Robbins in observance of the 90th anniversary of his birth. Students from SAB’s children’s division will perform Circus Polka, while advanced students will star in 2 + 3 Part Inventions and Fanfare. Robbins originally choreographed 2 + 3 Part Inventions on SAB’s students for the 1994 Workshop Performances. Now part of New York City Ballet’s repertoire, this will be the first time the ballet has been performed by students since the 1994 premiere.

The performances are scheduled for Saturday, May 31 (2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.), and Monday, June 2 (7:00 p.m.). The June 2 performance is a benefit. Tickets will be available for sale through sab.org on or about April 14.

SAB’s annual Workshop Performances have served as a public introduction to many of the most-talented classical ballet students in the nation since 1965, when faculty member Alexandra Danilova initiated the annual spring productions under the supervision of SAB founder George Balanchine. Many of the advanced students who perform in the fully staged presentations of classic and contemporary ballets go on to sign professional contracts with the New York City Ballet and other major dance companies in the U.S. and abroad. Among the scores of notable SAB alumni who made their pre-professional debuts at SAB’s Workshop are Ethan Stiefel, Paloma Herrera, Wendy Whelan, Peter Boal, Jock Soto, Fernando Bujones, Sherri LeBlanc, Kyra Nichols, James Sewell, Gelsey Kirkland, Leslie Browne, Victor Barbee, Patrick Bissell, Maria Caligari, Darci Kistler, Maria Kowroski, Damian Woetzel, Janie Taylor, Ashley Bouder, and Albert Evans.
