Young Dancer Series

Video Auditions

Students who are eligible for SAB’s Young Dancer Series and cannot attend one of the School’s designated Young Dancer auditions are invited to submit a video application between December 1, 2017 and January 19, 2018.

IMPORTANT: Students who will be 12 by July 31, 2018, who wish to be considered for both the Young Dancer Series and the five-week Summer Course in NYC may NOT audition by video.  Such students must attend an in-person audition.

 

Young Dancer Series Video Audition Guidelines

The video should be approximately 15 minutes in length and portray the student in practice clothes (girls in leotard and tights without skirts; boys in T-shirt and tights) in an abbreviated class with the following barre and center exercises. Pointe work is required only for students who are twelve. Students ages 10 & 11 may include pointe exercises if they have already started working on pointe, but these exercises are not required.
*Please do not include any variations or performance footage in the video audition.

Barre Exercises

  • Two demi-pliés and one grand plié in first, second, fourth and fifth positions
  • Tendu (both sides)
  • Frappé (both sides)
  • Piqué (both sides)
  • Rond de Jambe (à terre & en l’air) (both sides)
  • Développé (both sides)
  • Grand Battement (both sides)

Center Exercises

  • Tendu Battement
  • Abbreviated Adagio (four 8-counts)
  • Single pirouette or Relevé Passé if pirouettes have not yet been learned
  • Sauté (in all positions)
  • Changement
  • Assemblé
  • Jeté
  • Brief Waltz across the floor (two 8-counts)
  • Boys Only: Big Jump or Single Tour en l’air

Pointe (required for 12 year olds; optional for 10-11 year olds)
Show the following with two hands on the barre:

  • Relevé
  • Échappé (from 2nd and 5th)

*For pointe exercises, use portable barre if possible and film dancer from the front.  If a wall barre must be used, please film dancer from behind (do not film a side view).

Please do not include any variations or performance footage in the video audition.
 

Instructions for submitting a video application

  1. Upload your video to a video streaming service such as YouTube or Vimeo. Please do not provide a link that requires a file download. If your video has a password, please include the password on the application form (see below). Please do not create private videos that require an invitation to a specific email address to view. 
  2. Once your video is ready to view, complete the online video application which includes a field for a link to your video.  If the video has a password, include the password in this field. This form will collect your biographical and contact information as well as information on your previous ballet training.
  3. The Young Dancer Series video application fee is $45 (USD).  The online application for will require you to provide a credit card for payment.
  4. Once you submit the form and see a confirmation screen, your application is complete.

Video applications for the Young Dancer Series must be submitted between December 1, 2017 and January 19, 2018.  For best consideration, please submit your video as early as possible during the submission window.  A link to complete the application will be available from this page starting December 1.
