Born in Denmark. trained at Royal Danish Ballet School, and was principal dancer with Royal Danish ballet until 1969. Over thirty years with NYCB as principal dancer, choreographer and Ballet Master. After George Balanchine's death in 1983, became Co-Ballet Master in Chief of NYCB with Jerome Robbins, assuming the sole directorship in 1990. In 1983, Martins succeeded Balanchine as SAB's Chairman of Faculty. In 2000, he founded the New York Choreographic Institute, in which SAB participates annually.
