Audition FAQ

How do I get into SAB’s summer programs?

All students must audition for SAB’s summer programs

How old (or young) do I have to be to audition?

For SAB’s Young Dancer Series, students must be no younger than 10 and no older than 12 by July 31, 2018.  This means 9 year olds turning 10 by July 31 may audition for the Young Dancer Series. For SAB’s Summer Course, students must be no younger than 12 and no older than 18 by July 31, 2018.  This means 11 year olds may audition for the Summer Course if they will turn twelve by July 31.  Twelve year olds (as of July 31) may audition for both the Summer Course and one or both of the Young Dancer Series programs.

May I audition more than once for a summer program?

Students should not audition more than once per year for SAB’s summer programs.  However, students may audition in successive years for our summer programs whether or not they were accepted previously as long as they still meet the age requirements.

May I audition for a summer program and the Winter Term at the same time?

No.  There are distinctly separate auditions for SAB's Winter Term and summer programs.  We encourage all intermediate and advanced students interested in attending the Winter Term to first audition for Summer Course. A selection of Summer Course students are invited to enroll in the School’s Winter Term every year.

Is there a fee to audition?

Yes.  The audition fee varies depending on where you are auditioning, whether you pre-register and when you pay.  The National Audition Tour audition the fee is $32 if pre-paid at the time of pre-registration and $45 if paying onsite. For an audition at SAB in NYC the fee is $45 if prepaid at the time of pre-registration and $60 if paying onsite. Twelve year olds applying for Summer Course AND one or both Young Dancer Series programs add a $5 administrative fee to any of the applicable fees above.

What should I bring to the audition?

Applicants must show a copy of their birth certificate, passport or a state issued ID when checking in to the audition to provide proof of age. Students may not be allowed to audition if one of these documents is not presented.  Applicants who did not pre-pay their audition fee online should bring cash (preferably exact change) or check to complete their audition payment.  (Credit Cards are not accepted at any audition sites).  Headshots, dance photos, and resumes are not accepted.  Girls 11 and older should bring pointe shoes. Girls 10 and under should only bring pointe shoes if they have begun pointe work in their classes.  If possible, applicants who pre-register should bring a copy of the confirmation email they receive after completing the pre-registration form.

If I’m one age at the time of the audition and will be a different age during the summer programs, with which age group should I audition?

Applicants should audition with the age group that matches the age they are on the day of the audition. In cities where the youngest age group is 12, 11-year-olds who will be 12 by July 31, 2018, may audition with the 12-year-olds.  In cities where the youngest advertised age group is 10, 9-year-olds who will be 10 by July 31, 2018, may audition with the 10 year olds.

Is there a dress code for the summer auditions?

Girls may wear any solid color leotard, pink tights and pink ballet slippers/pointe shoes are preferred. No skirts or warm-ups in class.  Boys may wear any solid-color t-shirt without words or pictures; black or grey tights and black or white ballet slippers.

What is a summer audition like?

SAB’s auditions are in the form of an abbreviated ballet technique class.  Girls and boys audition together.  Girls will have pointe work, and boys will have battu and air turns at the end of class.

What does SAB look for in a dancer?

First and foremost, the School of American Ballet looks at each applicant as an individual.  The School is selective in admitting students; and enrollment is by audition only. Applicants must be young enough to derive the maximum benefit from their training, enjoy excellent health and have an anatomical structure suited to the demands of classical dance:  a well-proportioned, flexible, coordinated body, legs that easily adopt the turned-out condition, and a high instep.  They must also possess musical aptitude and a natural gift for movement.  Applicants for the Summer Course must be intermediate or advanced students who, in addition to the above, are at a stage of technical advancement proportionate to their age.  Applicants to the Young Dancer Series must be committed ballet students with a minimum of 1.5 years of training.

When will I be notified of the audition result?

For SAB’s Summer Course in NYC:
- Pre-registered applicants will be able to access their results online within 5 business days of the audition.
- Applicants who did not pre-register will receive results by email up to 3 weeks after their audition date.

For SAB’s Young Dancer Series:
- All results will be distributed via email on or before February 5 regardless of application method.

May I request and receive a critical evaluation of my audition?

No. Individual audition performance critiques are not provided.

Can I audition for more than one summer program?

Yes--if you meet the age requirements.  Students who will be twelve years old by July 31, 2018, are eligible for the Summer Course in NYC and Young Dancer Series.  Ten to 12 year olds may audition for both Young Dancer Series programs. Thirteen to 18 year olds are only eligible for SAB's Summer Course in NYC. Students will have a chance to indicate all programs to which they are applying on the registration form.  There is a $5 additional administrative fee for any 12 year old auditioning to both SAB's Summer Course and Young Dancer Series.

Can I attend more than one summer program in the same year?

Yes! You may apply for more than one program (as described in the question above) and attend all programs to which you are accepted.

Can I audition by video?

  • Applicants currently living outside of the continental US may submit an audition video for any SAB Summer Programs.  Please use the International Video Form for your application.  Click here to learn more.
  • Students who wish to apply to the Young Dancer Series programs may audition by video if they are unable to attend an audition in person.  Learn more about submitting a video audition for the Young Dancer Series.
  • IMPORTANT: US-based 12 year olds who wish to apply to BOTH the Summer Course and the Young Dancer Series must attend an in-person audition.

I'll be 12 by July 31, 2018, and submitted a video application for the Young Dancer Series but I've deciced I also want to apply to the Summer Course.  What do I do?

You should register for and attend an in-person audition at SAB or at one of our National Audition Tour cities.  Your in-person audition will serve as your audition for all programs. We will disregard your video application and you will forfeit the video application fee. (Note that you will have to pay the audition fee for an in-person audition.)
